Bike tour to Cuxhaven to the "Alte Liebe" (Old Love)

Hello everyone πŸ‘‹,

Today we went on a bike tour 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️ to Cuxhaven.

Our first destination was the Cuxhavener Platte 🚐. This is a very large and popular, completely paved parking area for motorhomes, located directly at the Cuxhaven ferry port and considered one of the most famous motorhome parking areas in Germany.

It has achieved cult status not because of its surface, but because of its unique location.

The site is situated right on the North Sea and the mouth of the Elbe River, where you can observe the traffic of the large container ships, cruise ships, and ferries on their way to the Kiel Canal or Hamburg up close. The first row of pitches offers a direct, unobstructed view of the shipping channel.

From there, we continued on to the "Alte Liebe" (Old Love) viewing platform, which has a 300-year history.  At that time, the harbor entrance was severely damaged by storm surges. To protect the harbor and prevent erosion of the shoreline, three decommissioned ships were sunk at this location, surrounded by piles, and the spaces between them filled with stones and brushwood. The structure served as a breakwater and landing stage.

One of the three sunken ships was said to have been called "Die Liebe" or "Ol' Leev," from which the colloquial name "Alte Liebe" (Old Love) developed.

There, we parked our bikes and explored the town center on foot. We fortified ourselves with a slice of Donauwelle (a type of German cake) and a nice cup of coffee.

We noticed our legs were starting to get heavy, so we headed back to Duhnen. There, we watched the sunset from the beach promenade and went to the "Tohuus" restaurant for dinner. The restaurant is highly recommended.
